Nestled in the Rif Mountains, the blue city of Chefchaouen is one of Morocco's most enchanting escapes. Here is everything you need to plan the perfect visit.

Why Chefchaouen Captivates

Chefchaouen's blue-washed walls and winding lanes create a dreamlike atmosphere found nowhere else in Morocco. Cooler and calmer than the imperial cities, it is a place for wandering slowly, photographing every corner, and breathing mountain air.

Getting There

Chefchaouen lies in the north, a scenic drive from Fes, Tangier, or Rabat. There is no airport nearby, so a private transfer is the most comfortable option, winding up through green hills to the town perched on the mountainside.

  • Around four hours by road from Fes
  • Roughly two hours from Tangier
  • Best reached by private transfer

What to See and Do

Spend your days losing yourself in the medina, climbing to the Spanish Mosque for a panoramic sunset, and browsing the local crafts and woven goods for which the region is known. The pace is gentle and the rewards are visual and restorative.

  • The blue medina lanes at dawn
  • The Spanish Mosque viewpoint
  • Plaza Uta el-Hammam and the kasbah
  • Ras el-Maa waterfall

How Long to Stay

One full day allows you to see the highlights, but an overnight stay lets you experience the medina at its most magical, quiet in the early morning before the day visitors arrive and glowing softly at dusk.
